Rescue dog training is the process through which dogs are trained to aid in search and rescue missions. As it is an intense, physical job, there are some breeds of dogs that are better suited for it. Usually, smaller dogs are not considered to be suited for search and rescue training.
Rescue dogs are required to endure bad physical conditions at times- they might have to climb steep, tall steps or ladders. They would have to work in the rain, sleet, windy or cold weather. They might have to carry out rescue missions in the woods or swamps as well. All of this calls for breeds that can withstand and adapt to a wide variety of environment.
Usually, dog breeds like Border collies, Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Bloodhounds, Dobermas, and Boxers etc are considered well suited for rescue dog training. Also, some mixed breeds that have the DNA of the above mentioned dogs can also be suited for training. You can take your dog to the nearest rescue dog training centre and assess it to find if it is suitable for going through the training program. Hope your dog has what it needs to be a rescue dog!
